Jacinda Ardern announces her resignation as Prime Minister of New Zealand

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced her resignation in an emotional speech.

The Prime Minister has revealed that she will step down on February 7 and will not contest this year's elections.

Fighting back tears as she addressed a New Zealand Labor Party caucus on Thursday, Ms Ardern said: 'I know what this job takes. money to do him justice. That's simple

"I am human, politicians are human. We give everything we can as long as we can. And then it's time. And for me, it's time",

She added that she made the decision after months of deliberation and hoped to spend more time with her family after the October election.

The PM spoke directly to her family members during the speech, telling her four-year-old daughter Neve: 'Mom can't wait to be here when you start school this year'

She also asked her fiancé Clarke Gayford if they could "finally get married" after the coronavirus pandemic thwarted their earlier plans.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office released after his speech said the "privilege" of his role included "the responsibility of knowing when you are the right person to lead, and also when you are not."
