Newcastle and Sunderland fans in X-rated motorway swap as Magpies head to Wembley

Newcastle United fans were caught up in a fun exchange with their Sunderland counterparts on Saturday as the two teams traveled south for their respective matches. The Magpies are preparing to take on Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday while their fierce local rivals had a league meeting with Coventry City.

Newcastle fans are likely to be nervous as they prepare for what will be the team's first competitive game at the new Wembley. Coach Eddie Howe's goal is simple: win the club's first major trophy since 1969.

Supporters have already started to descend on London, with footage going viral on social media of a group meeting a rival Sunderland fan coach on the 280-mile journey to the capital. The Black Cats faced a relatively shorter trip to face Coventry in their bid for promotion from the Championship.

The two groups came face to face when the coach carrying Newcastle supporters slowly passed another, which was packed full of Sunderland supporters.

then showed the rival fanbases shouting, jeering and waving before the Magpies coach faded from view. The video quickly circulated among fans, writing on Twitter, "Problems are hated, but bring the derbies. I love the rivalry."

Meanwhile, added, "On the way to Wembley and they're going to Coventry [three laughing emojis]." The Tyne-Wear derby is one of the most closely contested matches in English football, although the fate of the Black Cats means the two sides have not faced each other since 2015/16.
