10 dead in Gombe cholera outbreak

Gombe State has declared a cholera outbreak with as many as ten deaths already recorded in the state.

Gombe Health Commissioner Habu Dahiru said so in Gombe on Thursday while speaking to reporters on the outbreak of the disease in the state.

Mr. Dahiru, who was represented by the executive secretary of the Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Abdulrahman Shuaibu, said that as of September 20, the number of cases had risen to 236.

He said that in 2021, the state had a total of 2,373 cases of the disease in three outbreaks during the year.

“This year, from June, we had sporadic cases of cholera in Balanga Local Government Area and due to preparedness and rapid response it was largely brought under control without escalation.

"We are witnessing an increase in torrential rains and flooding in many parts of the state, which has led to outbreaks of cholera.

“These outbreaks are recorded in eight wards in Balanga, Yamaltu-Deba, Nafada, Funakaye and Gombe local government areas of the state.

“The State Department of Health promptly launched public health actions for the prevention and control of the disease.

"As of September 20, there was an increase in the number of cases in Gombe State, with 236 cases recorded so far," he said.

The commissioner said the Ministry of Health has activated an incident management system for cholera control at the state's primary health emergency center.

He added that the ministry has established 13 cholera treatment units in the five affected local government areas for free case management.

Mr. Dahiru also said decontamination of wells and boreholes in affected communities would be carried out.

He added that sensitization and distribution of water treatment tablets in all affected communities would be carried out.

He advised state residents to use clean water and prioritize the consumption of hygienically prepared meals.

"Personal and environmental hygiene are proven preventive measures against disease, so let's prioritize hygiene in this regard," the official said.
