2023 Census: All LGs will be captured — NPC

The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Nasir Kwarra, assured that the 2023 census would take place in all local government areas of the country despite the insecurity in many areas.

The PUNCH had reported that as many as 527 local government areas out of the country's 774 councils experienced security breaches between January and August 21, 2022.

But speaking at a workshop for trainers in Abuja on Monday, Kwarra said insecurity could not prevent the commission from having a successful exercise.

He said that in addition to having a partnership with security agencies and state and local governments, the commission plans to use locals in areas plagued by insecurity.

Kwarra said, “We have reached a tipping point with the start of the training of trainers. It is good to say that we have reached the peak of preparatory activities.

“These insecurity-ridden areas are still part of Nigeria. inhabitants of these troubled areas to effect the capture, we will.

“We will also seek cooperation from citizens, Nigeria needs accurate data to plan all aspects of our lives.”

He also said that in preparation for the 2023 census, the commission had introduced new technologies that would ensure the credibility of the exercise.

"In preparation, we have introduced new technologies such as CensusPAD and CSPro to ensure that the 2023 Population and Housing Census is credible, reliable and acceptable.

“The geospatial and infrastructure data along with the count form must be downloaded to the tablets, also known as personal digital assistants, which are ultra-portable computers that can run a variety of software.

"Based on the above, data collection for the 2023 Population and Housing Census will be through computer-assisted personal interviews."
