Journalist dismisses Mbappe's 'laughing' against England myth; France 'couldn't believe' Kane's decision

France 'couldn't believe' Harry Kane got up to take his second penalty, according to a reporter, while Kylian Mbappe 'didn't laugh' at Kane.

Kane scored a penalty and missed another as goals from Aurélien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud secured a 2-1 victory for France and a place in the semi-finals of the World Cup, where they will face Morocco on Wednesday.

Despite their strong performance against France, it was the Three Lions' worst showing at the major tournament under Southgate, which led England to a World Cup semi-final in 2018 and the final of the Euro last year.

Kane took 'responsibility' for his late missed penalty, potentially costing England progress, but it was a game by wide margins that England ultimately lost.

One incident that particularly caught the attention of England fans was when Mbappe appeared to laugh after Kane kicked over the bar.

It has been suggested on social media and in some media that Mbappe was making fun of England and Kane, but French journalist Julien Laurens insists he was celebrating as normal.

"He's not laughing," Laurens told talkSPORT. “He parties and shouts. It looked like he was laughing.

"Everyone was talking about him and he wanted to play a good game, he kind of influenced the first goal.

"But it was just a relief more than anything."

Kane sent his penalty easily in the first half, but his 85th-minute miss prevented England from going extra time.

And Laurens claims the France team and coaching staff were puzzled as to why England also allowed Kane to take the second kick.

Laurens added: "The French couldn't believe Kane was taking second. They were convinced someone else would take him. They said it was impossible.

"If you remember the Eintract Frankfurt game in the Champions League, he kicked the second penalty over the bar.

"There is already something for him in taking two penalties in the same game against the same goalkeeper.

"If that goalkeeper is your friend, and they're really good friends, they see each other outside of football, maybe there's something to that."

Ally McCoist – who commentated on the World Cup – gave his thoughts on Kane's second penalty. He replied: "If England have someone else's penalty and they miss it, the criticism is double. They would have been crucified."
