The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday posted in Abakaliki the list of gubernatorial candidates nominated by political parties for the 2023 gubernatorial race in Ebonyi State.

Speaker of the Ebonyi House of Assembly, Francis Nwifuru, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, and Bernard Odoh, former Secretary to the Government of Ebonyi State, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance , were on the list.

Also cleared by the commission to run for governor are Ebonyi Ifeanyichukwuma Odii of the People's Democratic Party, Edward Nkwegu, the Labor Party candidate, and Chukwuma Nwandugo of the Action Alliance.

Other gubernatorial candidates on the INEC list include Sunday Opoke of the Young Progressive Party and Anthony Usulor of the Nigerian Renaissance Movement.

The Resident Election Commissioner in Ebonyi, Joseph Chukwu, who announced the release to reporters in his office in Abakaliki, said the posting complied with Section 32(1) of the Elections Act.

“The law empowers the commission to post the final list of genuine candidates for any election 150 days before election day,” Chukwu said.

According to him, 13 political parties fielded gubernatorial candidates and their running mates for the March 2023 gubernatorial election in Ebonyi.

He said 15 political parties had also fielded 246 candidates for the House of Assembly elections and added that campaigns for the gubernatorial and state assembly elections would begin on October 12.

The INEC official warned gubernatorial and House of Assembly candidates against launching their campaigns before the stipulated time.

“246 candidates from all political parties will compete for seats in the 24 constituencies of Ebonyi State.

“We would like to advise that the campaigns for the gubernatorial and house of assembly elections have not begun; campaigns will start on October 12 as provided for in the 2022 electoral law.

"It is an offense for political parties or their candidates to engage in campaigns outside of the INEC-approved calendar of activities," Chukwu said.
