2023: Omo-Agege accuses Okowa of sponsoring Atiku's campaign with public funds

The All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Delta State, Ovie Omo-Agege, has accused the Governor of Delta State of using public funds to sponsor the presidential campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Mr. Omo-Agege, Deputy Speaker of the Nigerian Senate, said this on Thursday as he spoke to reporters after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is PDP Vice Presidential Candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Mr. Omo-Agege said the 'fragment of infrastructure' in the state could have been solved 'if most of the money the current governor has spent funding the Atiku/Okowa campaign for president' had been channeled in this direction.

The APC candidate said Mr Okowa had received about 4.2 trillion naira in federal allowance.

He lamented that the state's waterfront areas lack hospitals despite the fact that the state's last two governors were doctors.

“I think we can do better. We are a wealthy state. We have enough resources. Our roads, our schools and our hospitals are in very poor condition.”

Mr. Omo-Agege said he would focus on building infrastructure in the state if elected.

He promised to engage the services of reputable companies to manage major road projects in the state and also provide incentives to bring back companies that left the state due to insecurity.

"We want to address the health sector, we want to address the education sector, if you go to most of the institutions of higher education that we have in the state, there are even institutions of state higher education which are basically run by Tertiary Education Trust Funds, some of them are like glorified high schools,” he said.

The Delta government reacts

Delta State Information Commissioner Charles Aniagwu has dismissed as incorrect the allegation that Governor Okowa invested public funds in the PDP presidential campaign.

He challenged Mr. Omo-Agege to provide evidence.

Mr. Aniagwu, who said only federal roads were in poor condition in the state, blamed it on Mr Omo-Agege's "poor representation" in the Senate.

He also dismissed as false Mr. Omo-Agege's allegation regarding the lack of hospitals in the riverine areas of Delta State.

He said that Mr. Okowa had built hospitals in river areas - one of them, he said, is located in the heart of inlets close to the Atlantic Ocean.

The commissioner said it is not true that Mr Okowa's administration has received 4 trillion naira in federal allocations since 2015.
