2023: Police distribute uniforms, riot gear to staff

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba has ordered the immediate distribution of uniforms, kits, equipment and riot gear to police personnel ahead of the 2023 general election.

The Force's Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said so in a statement Monday in Abuja.

Presidential and National Assembly elections are held on February 25, while gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections will be held on March 11.

Mr. Adejobi said riot gear includes body armor with armored plates, ballistic helmets, long and short range tear gas for civil unrest management, and stun guns.

He said the idea was to ensure officers were well suited to perform policing in a professional manner before, during and after the 2023 general election.

He added that the items were recently procured to ensure the welfare of police personnel as preparations for the election continued.

According to him, the idea is to optimize professionalism and friendly engagements in crowd control and the containment of civil unrest.

Mr. Adejobi said it was also about embracing modern police crime and crime reduction techniques as much as possible.

The police spokesman pledged the commitment of his authorities to improve the operational capacity of personnel at all levels, in order to completely eradicate crime and criminality.

Mr. Adejobi said the IGP enjoined the officers and men of the Force to exercise discipline and decency, as well as to respect the fundamental rights of people in the performance of their duties.
