Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he would complete the Ibom Deep seaport in Akwa Ibom state, south-south Nigeria, if elected president in 2023.

Mr. Obi said this on Tuesday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, after visiting the project site in Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area, where he conducted an aerial assessment of the project via a helicopter, reported Channels Television.

The project, which spans 14,400 hectares, is expected to create more than 10,000 jobs upon completion and boost the state and national economy.

According to the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), the federal agency overseeing the project, the seaport project is intended to become a major national and regional economic gateway that will provide additional container handling capacity for the country.

Addressing a crowd of supporters on Tuesday during his campaign in Uyo, Obi chastised the federal government for failing to develop the seaport which he says was started more than 40 years ago .

"I was told that the most important thing for the people of Akwa Ibom is the deep seaport and I told the president of the presidential campaign council that when I am done from here, a helicopter will take me there to see it as well as when I start we will put into practice.”

The Channels TV reporter who accompanied Mr. Obi on the visit told PREMIUM TIMES that the LP candidate did not land but only observed the project site from the helicopter.

Speaking to Channels Television after the visit, Mr. Obi said the project, when completed, would boost production and create jobs for Nigerians.

"The facility which I was able to inspect today (Tuesday) if developed will go a long way towards building the production that Nigerians envision as it will be exported. It is all about export. TEXEM Advert

“This is how we would transform this country when we manufacture for export. The facility can be developed into a gas petrochemical hub with other export-oriented domestic manufacturing industries” , Mr. Obi said in an interview with Channels TV.

A university professor, Etim Frank, praised Mr. Obi for his visit to the seaport site and called it a "masterstroke".

"No other politician had visited the project site, assessing it before accepting it. Mr. Obi also met with students, elderly people and traditional leaders, which many politicians do not They are gatekeepers and opinion leaders,” Mr. Frank, an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Uyo University, told PREMIUM TIMES on Wednesday.
