23-year-old ex-con arrested again hours after NGO facilitated his release

23-year-old Yakubu Yussuf, convicted of robbing the Lagos State government, was rearrested hours after his release from prison.

An anonymous NGO allegedly facilitated his release from prison after paying his fine option.

Yussuf, who was arrested and sentenced to one month in prison for theft from the state fuel dump, was re-arrested last Saturday for theft from state fire department premises from Lagos.

The image maker in charge of the State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest of the suspect in a statement he signed and made available to the Nigerian Tribune.

Hundeyin said, "Rapid Response Squad (RRS) officers arrested an ex-con on Saturday morning hours after his release from prison.

"The suspect, 23-year-old Yakub Yusuf, was arrested at around 8:00 a.m. on Saturday after being released after being sentenced to one month in jail for theft at the fuel dump in Lagos State, Alausa , Ikeja.

“Hearing that he was imprisoned because he could not pay a fine which was an option, an NGO facilitated his release by paying the fine on Friday November 11, only ten days after his conviction on November 1 2022."< /p>

Hundeyin also added that "Yakub has been arrested again after breaking into the premises of the Lagos State Fire Department where he stole valve covers from an old fire truck under repair."

The RRS led by CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi has since transferred the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
