Phillip Lim opens the doors to an immersive gallery experience, "A New York City Vibration", for the public this weekend. But before guests could see the artistic and visual experience of his fall collection, Lim sat down with WWD to preview the second act of his brand's latest story - an ode to New York called "Someday, Somehow, Somewhere". /p>
"We opened the black lookbook with great seriousness. It's a side of us that you know we don't really show much but it's nice to refresh the palette and literally create a New York uniform - all black, parkas, denim, leather, but when you look closely all the femininity comes to mind lives and reveals itself," Lim said of her all-black opening looks. For example, a sturdy parka with faux fur over a "concrete jungle" blouse and denim track pants with waist bands. of hybrid boxers, a tough-girl leather biker dress with a soft poplin bubble skirt, or a Carhartt-inspired chocolate brown denim cropped hoodie with matching midi skirt and tall faux python boots (chic and durable for the streets of the city).
As before the fall, Lim explored different archetypes of the eclectic and energizing city in a cool way while heading towards on the idea of a "journey of self-identity".
"The reason is that I chose two Upper East Side zip codes up in Chinatown. That's really my journey here: my discovery of coming from California to try to fit in, in New York, but also as a product of immigrants as well. There's a section of that, in addition to this quintessential New York uniform, it's a familiar section of private schools,” Lim said. That's why we're here - we're all misfits and troublemakers."
He brought the ideas together through varsity varsity jackets, casual sportswear and blazers ( with the first brand emblems); bright hybrid puffy jackets with woolen stockings over a Chinatown shopping bag and bonded print dresses inspired by distressed textiles, faded “vintage” satin dresses and pretty chiffon skirts edged with lace; cute devoured tops (a riff of leftover wheat dough from the Wild Posting commercials) and intriguing macrame adopt the epitome of men's striped shirts alongside sturdy outerwear and easy, feminine layers. Like before fall, Lim referenced Lady Liberty with subtle upside-down crown darts to create the shape of a skirt while recontextualizing the twinkling lights of the Empire State Building with light fringes of garlands on her anchored evening dress.
