Anambra CP reacts to alleged extortion by men in his command and orders an investigation

Anambra State Police Command has responded to allegations of extortion by some members of Onitsha Central Police Station Command.

Harrison Gwamnishu, a human rights activist and coordinator of the Human Rights Foundation behind bars, recounted an incident of arrest, involving officers from the police command of Anambra State.

Gwamnishu said a man named Chidiebere was arrested on July 4 after leaving the ShopRite mall, where he went shopping. The police officers involved, including a certain Harrison Emerenini, saw him with an iPhone and arrested him.

He was later extorted for 600,500 naira after being threatened with being called an IPOB member.

He added that after his group intervened, the man was paid in full for the extorted money.

Meanwhile, Anambra State Police Commissioner Echeng Echeng has vowed to uncover and punish the officers involved in such a heinous act.

A statement from State Police Command spokesman DSP Toochukwu Ikenga said the commissioner had ordered an investigation into the matter.

He said: "The attention of Anambra State Police Command has been drawn to a trending social media report of money extorted but recovered from a police officer in the command.

"Police Commissioner CP Echeng Echeng ordered the Deputy Police Commissioner in charge of X-Squad to investigate and unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The CP who disapproved of such an act reiterated that the command under his direction will not tolerate any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel.

He also urged citizens to report any police tampering/conduct to X Squad and the Command Public Complaints Office PCB.
