Arsenal get what they pay for as Brighton get ripped off: Ranking each club by impact of highest-paid players

Some Premier League clubs may feel aggrieved by the effect their highest-paid player has had on results. Arsenal will be among those who are quite happy.

Numbers in parentheses represent PPM (points per game), the first being the club's overall figure so far this season, the second being the personal best of said highest paid player.

Newcastle (1.81) - Bruno Guimaraes (2.15) Considering Newcastle have yet to win a Premier League game in which Bruno Guimaraes has not played since signing, one can certainly say they get their money's worth for the wonderful midfielder. Even with the upcoming investment, the Magpies will be phenomenally successful in beating the value of the fee and his salary.

Arsenal (2.46) v Gabriel Jesus (2.69) It's true that Arsenal did remarkably well in not having their title challenge derailed by the loss of their star striker, summer signing and - at least until to Mikel Arteta posing with his arm around Bukayo Saka – the highest earner in over three months, but the prospects could have been even brighter had Gabriel Jesus been available. Arsenal have dropped just points in two of their 16 appearances: a loss to Man Utd in September and a draw with Southampton the following month.

Nottingham Forest (0.96) - Keylor Navas (1.11) It is at least a little odd that Nottingham Forest's two highest paid players are goalkeepers. Keylor Navas (0.71) won the permanent crown when he arrived in January but the Tricky Trees agreed to cover Dean Henderson's salary at Man Utd when they loaned him out and until his injury they had no reason to regret this decision. And no, Jesse Lingard is not making £200,000 a week.

Leeds (0.96) - Rodrigo (1.10) While 188 players have more Premier League minutes to their name this season, only six rank above Rodrigo in goals. Leeds have won just one of the seven games they have missed through injury in 2022/23 - and that was a 1-0 win at home to current side Southampton.

Crystal Palace (0.96) - Wilfried Zaha (1.04) Wilfried Zaha has missed 38 Premier League games for Crystal Palace since the start of the 2015/16 season; the Eagles earned 26 points in those meetings. Roy Hodgson will probably remember where he stored the bubble wrap.

West Ham (0.92) - Lucas Paqueta (1) "I didn't want him sent off because then he would be suspended for the next few games," David Moyes said after Lucas Paqueta stormed off the tunnel - because there is no other way to navigate an artificial passage as a substitute - in a draw with Aston Villa. There are good reasons why the manager doesn't want to lose his club-record £51million signing.

Brentford (1.56) – Ben Mee (1.62) First of all, a Premier League club having 33-year-old Ben Mee as their highest-paid player is absolutely stunning work. Again, the centre-half missed a game this season and Brentford lost that 4-0 to an Aaron Danks-inspired Aston Villa. Double his salary.

Fulham (1.44) - Bernd Leno (1.48) The clauses worth £5m involved in a deal that brought Bernd Leno from Arsenal to Fulham for an initial fee of £3m sterling seem likely to be activated. The Gunners owe £1m subject to…
