Arsenal urged to 'take a hit' on £72m flop this summer as outcast 'accepts' £5.8m outing

Arsenal have been encouraged to 'take a hit' on Nicolas Pepe this summer as he won't be of any use to them next season.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Arsenal haven't had all the signings in recent years, but they were miles away from the mark with Pepe.

A whopping £72m was paid to sign him. In their defense, this came after registering 22 goals and eleven assists for Lille in Ligue 1 during the 2018/19 campaign.

When Premier League clubs spend big on signing Ligue 1 players, they often take a risk because the level of the league just isn't the same.

Pepe turned out to be a flop at Arsenal as he failed to live up to his major price tag.

The winger is unlikely to play much for Arsenal next season. He has been linked with Newcastle United and that's a move we'd like to see.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith thinks the time is right for the club to sell Pepe:

"As many clubs find out, getting rid of Premier League players when they have such good contracts is so difficult," Smith told The Express.

"Sometimes Arsenal had to take hits on [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Mesut] Ozil just to get them out.

"Pepe is the big one because they bought him for over £70m. They won't get anything like that back. Nothing like it.

"It was one of the worst transfer amounts, not as bad as Lukaku but it was up there.

"He doesn't seem to be [Mikel] Arteta's cup of tea. He's not consistent and there aren't many coaches like that. So if they could get Pepe out of the door, that would be a bonus."

Another pariah who is about to leave is Lucas Torreira. You might be surprised to learn that he is still at Arsenal, but he won't stay under contract with the club for long.

The midfielder actually impressed early in his career at the Gunners, but Mikel Arteta was never a fan of him.

Torreira has had spells at Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina in recent seasons and is now set to join Galatasaray on a permanent basis.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the Uruguay international has 'agreed' to a move to the Turkish side.

The reporter has yet to give this transfer the 'Let's go' treatment, but the deal is expected to be finalized in the coming days.

Arsenal are set to receive around £5.8m (€7m) for Torreira four years after paying £26m to sign him from Sampdoria.
