Atiku refuses to commit to using Nigeria's public health system

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday night refused to commit to using Nigeria's public health system if elected to lead the country.

"The establishment that will take care of my health...I will not," said Atiku, Nigeria's number 2 from 1999 to 2007. "We have limits, you know."

Atiku spoke at Arise TV's presidential town hall where he appeared alongside Peter Obi of the Labor Party and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People's Party.

Bola Tinubu, the ruling APC presidential candidate, had earlier said he would boycott the event and others like it.

Candidates were asked to commit to publicly reporting their health status and to commit to using the country's public health system.

Mr. Kwankwaso gave affirmative answers to both questions. The same was true for Mr. Obi, who added that he had used the public facilities he had built as governor of Anambra.

In Atiku's case, he said he would disclose his medical condition.

"Yes, I have it," he said, indicating that he had his health report and would release it.

Then, after two reminders, he attempted to evade the question by repeating only "I have" repeatedly.

However, the host's insistence forced him to speak, and he refused to commit to using the country's public health system as president.

Earlier in the conversations, Atiku had suggested private sector investment to raise the country's health standards.
