"Avatar: The Way of Water" isn't perfect. It's still the best story we have on climate change.

It's been over a decade since the first Avatar movie was released and became the highest-grossing movie of all time. In 2009, when it was released, I had just had my first Facebook account and a flip phone. Since then, the world has gone through many drastic changes: from three different US presidents to an unprecedented global pandemic.

Still, the return of the Avatar world doesn't feel like a throwback. Even though there's another decade between this and each of James Cameron's three planned additional installments, I'm sure I'll still feel their themes are equally resonant.

Of course, in 30 years, we could be in an environmental dire situation. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world should have warmed more than 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit from pre-industrial levels by then if we continue to burn fossil fuels at the same rate we are. we currently are. This amount of warming would mean exponentially more floods, wildfires, droughts, widespread displacements and mass extinctions - and the only way to curb the rate at which the Earth is warming is to make " rapid and unprecedented change" now, according to Reuters
