Bamise: How my sister died, the brother of the deceased testifies in court

A witness in the trial of murder and rape suspect Andrew Ominikoron told the court that the deceased's pubic area was found to be "damaged".

Abegunde Ayanwola, the brother of the deceased, gave evidence in the High Court at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos on Thursday.

Mr. Ominikoron, a driver, is accused of raping and murdering 22-year-old fashion designer Bamise Ayanwola in February inside a BRT bus.

He is also accused of raping another passenger, Maryjane Odezelu, on November 25, 2021.

Testimony

Mr. Ayanwola said the deceased was the last of ten children.

He said that on February 27 (Sunday), he received a call from his Kano-based brother, Daniel, asking for their sister.

“I called my house to find out if she was there and was told that she was not. And her colleague told me that Bamise was coming to my house on a surprise visit to be with my woman,” he said.

"Then the lady told me something happened on the bus she got on and she told me it was a BRT bus. And I said if she took the BRT bus, she would be safe."

Mr. Ayanwola told the court that he became alarmed when the colleague sent the voice note they shared on WhatsApp.

"So I called my sister to come to the station," he said.

He said that on Monday he went to the BRT station, Terminal 3, to report the incident, but was directed to the Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL).

“We were referred to two CSOs and they said that none of the drivers had reported missing person cases,” he said.

"And I asked for access to their CCTV so we could find out what happened in their vehicle," he said.

He added that officials told him to get a police report to access their CCTV.

He said they were "abused" at the police division and had to return to the LBSL where a certain Mr. Aluko admitted that a bus had gone missing.

He said he wrote a letter to the Office of the Transportation Commissioner, the Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and the State Legislative Assembly.

He said they reported the case to Jakande Police Division and the police chief said it was no longer a missing person case but a missing person case. kidnapping.

“Some guys on social media said we should give them Bamise’s phone number because they wanted to track his number. After a while they told us we should go to Shagamu,” he said. -he declared.

"After a while, they said the phone left the area and was around Ososa village. We couldn't find my sister.

"On March 7, someone said that we should go and check the Ebute-Ero police station. When we got there, we showed them my sister's picture. My sister died on the night of 26 and the police recovered the body.

“She was coming to my house, she was the only one who knew when my wife was going to give birth. She died because she was coming to my house,” he said through tears.

He said he found his sister's body at the morgue where it was labeled unknown. "Not until 30 minutes later my brother called and the driver of the vehicle was apprehended."

During the legal proceedings, the voice note exchanged by the deceased and her friend was admitted as evidence.

In the exchange of voice notes, the deceased said she was alone on the bus and the driver refused to pick up any other passengers.

Later, she sent another voicemail saying that the driver had taken a woman and three men on the bus.

Then the friend sent a message asking if she had arrived at her bus stop, but the message was not answered.

Describing the "damaged" pubic area, Mr Ayanwola said that "I saw traces of blood on that part".

During cross-examination, defense attorney Abayomi Omotubora asked him to explain what he meant by "damaged lower part".

"She was a virgin. She was badly raped by maybe two or three men and you want me to describe that? I won't do that," the witness replied.

Apologies

Earlier in the hearing, Mr. Omotubora apologized "for being late" to the last session.

"This was due to the unprecedented traffic jam coming from Ikorodu," he added.
