Benzema, Courtois and De Bruyne battle for UEFA gong player of the year award

August 12 - Karim Benzema, Thibaut Courtois and Kevin De Bruyne have been nominated for UEFA Player of the Year. Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have been shortlisted in the coaching category.

An initial list of 15 players was narrowed down to three nominees by a jury of elite coaches and European journalists. Both Benzema and Courtois played crucial roles in Real Madrid's spectacular Champions League triumphs last season, culminating in a narrow 1-0 victory in the final against Liverpool.

It was Madrid's fourteenth European Cup victory. Belgian midfielder De Bruyne was the standout player of Manchester City's Premier League title-winning campaign.

In the coach category, three heavyweights in the game will compete for the prize. Carlos Ancelotti led Spain's Real Madrid to the double, winning the League and Champions League while Pep Guardiola and his team cemented City's dominance in the English top flight. Jurgen Klopp's side lost the Champions League in Paris but still won the domestic league cup and FA Cup double.

The winners will be announced at the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony on 25 August in Istanbul. UEFA added that "the voting for the UEFA Women's Player and Coach of the Year awards is underway". The nominees will be announced next week.
