Brain drain is causing huge damage to the Nigerian economy – Anike

Vice Chancellor, Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Rev Fr Prof Christian Anike has identified job creation and employment opportunities as the panacea to brain drain in Nigeria.

Anike, who said the brain drain was hurting the country's economy, said the only way to stem the tide was for the government to create job opportunities and better working conditions.

He spoke at the graduation ceremony at the Center of Practical Skills, Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.

The project, implemented by the International Center for Migration Policy Development, ICMPD, in Enugu, Nigeria, graduated the first group of young Nigerians to complete vocational training.

The Vice-Chancellor said the University embarked on the collaboration after discovering that job creation and job opportunities in Africa remained the key “to stem the tide of migration, referred to as ‘Japa in Nigeria’, the trend away.”

While commending the ICMPD, he said the idea of the Center “is to provide workers to companies, so that companies have no problem finding their workers.

“I confirm, not by hearsay, that these young men are ready to provide the necessary skills, the necessary manpower in Nigeria.

“I really hope these young men don’t need to leave Nigeria to explore greener pastures

"I hope with this young man and women will be paid so well that they will not need to travel outside Nigeria

“We know the effect of brain drain, whether it is on the side of doctors, on the side of other professionals; in this country, brain drain is a huge damage to the economy of any nation.”

While urging graduates to prepare for challenges, the VC said that every country in the world has its own problems.

"Challenges, including insecurity, should not deter you. Whether in the United States, I can tell you that at least every day, 20 people are killed in the United States of America

"I can tell you that there is no country in the world where you do not have problems with insecurity, your country is not worse than these other places.

“So I recognize the challenges you face, the insecurity and of course other challenges, but I am confident that these challenges have prepared you.

"Looking at you, I see those who will drive the economy of this country, I see millionaires, not by stealing money but by providing knowledge that will change our country," he said.

Speaking, the Director of the Practical Skills Center, CoPS, Mr. Niranjan Gupta said that the graduates were the result of perseverance, dedication and hard work.

"This milestone in your life is a testament to your commitment to your personal growth and the countless hours you have invested in your skills and expanding your knowledge," he noted.

For his part, the best graduate student, Ositadimma Emmanuel, praised the Center for the opportunity to acquire practical skills and experiences in the career they have chosen, stressing that “they have enriched us to become who we are today. We will make this center very proud.”
