The replacement for the position of running mate of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Ibrahim Masari, has announced his resignation from the party.

The PUNCH reports that Masari made his intention to resign known in a letter to APC members on Sunday.

The letter, which was signed by Masari, reads: "This is to inform our esteemed party leaders under the leadership of our able Chairman, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired), the many members of the party and the great people of Nigeria, of the outcome of a crucial discussion I have just had with the flag bearer of our great party, the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

"I had the honor and privilege of being nominated as Asiwaju Tinubu's running mate last month after a hotly contested presidential primary ahead of the 2023 general election.

"But, after much consideration and broader consultation, I now wish to step aside. I have realized that my decision will allow Asiwaju to have more leeway to provide more accommodation and inclusion that will position our party to win the next elections, with the support of the Nigerian people.

"By resigning, I believe I can still serve our party and the country in many other capacities.

"I would like to confirm that I have submitted my withdrawal letter and affidavit to this effect as Asiwaju Bola TInubu's running mate in the upcoming elections.

"On my behalf and on behalf of my family, I would like to sincerely thank Asiwaju Tinubu - the new President, Insha Allah - for his confidence in me and we promise to remain steadfast in our support for him and the party."
