A British couple's dream vacation to Canada ended in a 'nightmare' when they were ordered off their plane by police without receiving any explanation.

Retired surveyor Richard Brailey, 71, and his wife Patricia, 66, were among at least 25 passengers forced off Canada's Air Flight before it left Montreal for Heathrow.

The couple were given no reason for their deportation, but airline staff in the terminal later told them they might have been deported because they were drunk or not wearing masks.

They were left puzzled because they hadn't been drinking and constantly wore masks for them as they waited for the plane to take off soon after midnight Monday.

Other passengers ejected from the plane are believed to have included a pregnant woman, a couple with two children, at least three members of the Williams Racing Formula 1 team and the Aston Martin team doctor who was in Montreal for the Grand Prix this weekend.

Mr. Brailey insisted he didn't see any other passengers misbehaving or not following instructions from cabin crew on the plane.

He and his wife were forced to spend the night at the airport because they could not find a room in a hotel.
