Buhari recalls Bashir Ahmad and appoints him special assistant

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed his former Personal Assistant for New Media, Bashir Ahmad, as Special Assistant to the President for Digital Communications.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federation's Cabinet Secretary, Boss Mustapha, confirmed the appointment in a letter of appointment to Mr. Ahmad, dated July 20.

In the letter seen by NAN on Sunday in Abuja, Mustapha said the appointment took effect on July 19.

Mr. Ahmad had resigned from his former position as personal assistant to the president in line with the presidential directive urging all political office holders wishing to run for elected office to resign.

The presidential aide to the media lost his bid to secure the All Progressives Congressional ticket in the party primaries for the federal constituency of Gaya, Ajingi and Albasu.

Mr. Ahmad had disapproved of the way the party's primary was conducted, saying it was riddled with fraud.

NAN reports that the presidential social media official would be the only presidential aide "recalled" by the president since the conclusion of the APC primaries.

All cabinet ministers and presidential aides except Mr Ahmad, who resigned to contest the APC primaries but failed to secure party tickets, have since been replaced by the president.

Some social commentators who spoke to NAN about the promotion from media assistant to special assistant said that Mr. Ahmad had successfully managed the social media space as a personal assistant before his resignation.
