Buhari tells Senate to confirm Judge Ariwoola as CJN

The Senate has received an official request from President Muhammadu Buhari, to confirm the nomination of Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The request was contained in a letter dated July 25, 2022, and read by Senate President Ahmad Lawan at the start of Tuesday's plenary session.

The letter reads: "In accordance with Section 231(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I transmit for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of the Hon.Judge Olukayode Ariwoola is the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

"While I hope the submission will be reviewed with the usual promptness, please accept, Distinguished Speaker of the Senate, the assurances of my highest consideration. »

The appointment of Justice Ariwoola as CJN by President Buhari followed the resignation of former Chief Justice Muhammad Tanko on June 27, 2022.

Tanko's resignation came amid a protest by 14 aggrieved judges over welfare issues.

However, the former CJN, in his resignation letter, cited health reasons as the reason for his decision.

In another letter to the Senate dated July 21, 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari asked the upper house to confirm the appointment of Dr. Suleiman Agha Afikpo as the commissioner representing the southeastern zone, in the National Commission of Nigeria Hajj.

He explained that the request was in accordance with the provision of Article 3(2) of the Hajj Commission Act. Cap. 321, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004.

The Senate has not yet set a date for the selection and confirmation of the above two candidates.
