Retired Nigerian-born English footballer John Fashanu is disappointed following the Confederation of African Football's postponement of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to 2024, reports The PUNCH.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe, speaking to the media in Morocco's capital Rabat on Sunday, announced the postponement of the continental showpiece.

The 34th edition was originally scheduled for June 23 to July 23, 2023 in Ivory Coast, but Motsepe said the tournament would not go ahead as planned due to weather conditions in that country. West Africa.< /p>

Speaking with The PUNCH, Fashanu called the postponement "ridiculous".

He said: "This is a dream come true for the English Premier League and for other European leagues.

"It's a nice way for them to say that none of the African players will leave the clubs for the biggest tournament in Africa next year.

"But it's terrible and it's ridiculous to use the weather as an excuse to postpone AFCON because when has the weather ever prevented a footballer from playing football?

"Is it when it's snowing or raining or when the sun is so hot that I wouldn't play football? That's absolute rubbish and I call it rubbish. I don't Wasn't surprised when I saw the news but I was pretty horrified and it looks like we're backing off.

"I just hope we can do well in Africa and I don't think any of the biggest tournaments in Europe would have been postponed because of the weather."
