Castellanos wins Hudson River Derby for NY City, LAFC gets the upper hand from West

New York City picked up a big win for their season on Sunday, beating local rivals New York RB to win the Hudson River Derby on Sunday.

With City and NYRB second and third respectively in the Eastern Conference heading into Sunday's game, the stakes were higher than usual and that was reflected in the thin margins the game was played in.

>

It was fitting that the game-winning goal also reflected that, with NYRB defender Sean Nealis caught just for a split second in the 69th minute as play grew increasingly tense.

>

That lapse was enough for Santiago Rodriguez to perfectly weigh a pass over his head for Valentin Castellanos, who ran over it from his blind side, before finishing for the first time past Carlos Coronel who approached for his 13th goal leading the MLS of the season.

City restored their one-point deficit over Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Union with the win, while opening a critical five-point gap with NYRB in third.

Elsewhere in the East, Atlanta United and Orlando City only managed to draw 1-1, while Columbus Crew took full advantage, earning a sixth victory over FC Cincinnati 2-0.< /p>

Meanwhile in the Western Conference, Giorgio Chiellini and Gareth Bale made their debuts for Los Angeles FC as they reclaimed top spot with a 2-1 victory over Nashville SC.

Chiellini started as Bale came off the bench, but by then LAFC had already regained the lead through Jose Cifuentes, after Hany Mukhtar canceled out Cristian Arango's opening goal.

Real Salt Lake took full advantage, moving back to third place in the West with a 3-0 win over Sporting KC, while Houston Dynamo picked up a 2-1 victory over the SJ Earthquakes.

In Sunday's final game, traditional NASL and USL rivals Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers tied 1-1.
