Chelsea: Sneijder warns Blues against signing 'useless' Ajax star after failing €50m bid

Wesley Sneijder has hinted Chelsea would be foolish to sign Edson Alvarez as the central midfielder from Ajax is 'of no use' to the Dutch side.

From the outside, it was quite fun to watch Chelsea operate during the summer transfer window.

Their pursuit of Everton's Anthony Gordon was baffling and calmer heads eventually prevailed as their pressure to sign him was for naught.

After being unable to sign the winger, Chelsea didn't stop there as they chased down a midfielder and striker in the final days of the window.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang secured a return to the Premier League on deadline day as the former Arsenal captain left FC Barcelona for the Blues.

That left them with a new midfielder on the agenda and they eventually opted for Denis Zakaria. The ex-Man Utd target has joined Chelsea on loan from Juventus.

The move was a setback for everyone involved as the central midfielder barely played for the Premier League club.

It has previously been reported that Zakaria could return to Juventus in January as Chelsea consider ending his loan deal prematurely.

One of the other midfielders that Chelsea watched this summer was Alvarez. Around 50 million euros were offered, but the Dutch team refused to let him go as many of their valuable assets had already been let go.

Earlier this month it was claimed that a new interest in Alvarez from Chelsea could be on the cards in January if Zakaria leaves Stamford Bridge.

But former Netherlands and Inter Milan star Sneijder thinks Chelsea would be foolish to replace Alvarez. He thinks he is "of no use" to his team.

"Edson Alvarez plays every ball upside down or sideways, he's no use," Sneijder told Voetbal International.

"They [Ajax] should have taken him to London quickly. You could have signed two good players for this [amount of money offered by Chelsea this summer].

These comments come after Fabrizio Romano told Caught Offside that Alvarez is still "on Chelsea's roster".

"Chelsea had discussions about signing Edson Alvarez at the end of the summer, so could they come back for him in the near future?

"He has always been on Chelsea's list, but Ajax will try to keep him at least until the end of the season.

"There are no ongoing negotiations, and no decision will be made by Chelsea on the new midfielder in October; it will take time. Not easy, that's for sure.

"It seems possible that N'Golo Kante will not sign a new contract, making him a free agent this summer. If so, Chelsea will need a replacement, but there is no still a decision on who it will be."
