Chopova Lowena RTW Spring 2023

Emma Chopova and Laura Lowena caused a stir with the London Fashion Week catwalk debut of their eponymous fashion brand Chopova Lowena.

Everything was done as they wanted. The show was broadcast on the street, and many models are collaborators and friends of the house, who knew how to wear these colorful and folkloric pleated skirts and put their own personal touch to bring the presentation to life.

The duo said after the show that the outfits were made based on each of their body measurements. months ago, because "it was the perfect way to do it for us".

The parade felt like a celebration for the brand's community, which has supported the label since the duo graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2017.

When Mahoro Seward, fashion editor at i-D, who wore almost exclusively Chopova Lowena for the past few years walked the runway, the crowd boiled, with colleagues and friends cheering and clapping.

For those who haven't heard of the brand, Lowena and Chopova provided a great introduction with their spring Collection 2023. Titled "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose", Gertrude Stein's classic quote, the collection is a celebration of the duo's Bulgarian roots.

"These are the traditional references from Bulgarian traditional folklore and other Bulgarian things coming from my side like denim are inspired by how difficult it was for my parents to own jeans, as it was illegal during the communist era,” Lowena said.

They offered a variety of their signature pleated kilts, where the fabric is attached to a wide waistband in leather via carabiners, as well as dresses, leggings, shirts, vests and cuffs with colorful patterns inspired by their multicultural upbringing. They also added new jewelry categories and bespoke pieces this season.

Over the past five years, the duo have managed to turn these "tacky" folk dresses into a few -one of the essentials of street style, selling them to more than 60 retailers worldwide. It will be curious to see how the brand evolves, and how big its community can grow in the next five years.
