Coming Sooner: ETH Developers Advance Merger Date
Ethereum's transition to proof-of-stake is getting ever closer after developers agree to a tentative date for the mainnet merging.
NewThe Ethereum merger could come sooner than expected, after major developers announced a tentative merger date of September 15, which will see the blockchain transition to proof-of-stake.
The Ethereum mainnet merge date emerged after core developers such as Tim Beiko and Prysmatic Labs co-founder Terence Tsao agreed during a developer call on August 11 that this would be when the Total Terminal Difficulty (TTD) reaches 58750000000000000000000.
This was confirmed in a Github post titled "Attempt mainnet TTD" that Beiko committed to on August 11.
While the exact date and TTD may still be subject to change, the successes of the various testnet mergers could be a promising sign that the Ethereum mainnet will transition smoothly to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus next month.
The new official timeline is at least three days earlier than Ethereum lead developer Tim Beiko's latest prediction of September 19.

The long number provided is called Total Terminal Difficulty (TTD), specifying the end of Proof-of-Work (PoW) and when Proof-of-Stake (PoS) will begin. The TTD is the total difficulty required for the final block that will be mined before transitioning to PoS.
