Commonwealth Games Day 4: Heartbreak for Nigeria team in weightlifting and table tennis

It was not a good day for Team Nigeria on day four of action at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as only one bronze medal was added to the country's total on Monday.< /p>

Signs of what the day could look like came during the morning session at Coventry Arena in the men's 66kg round 16 judo event.

Edwin Peter, despite having high hopes of a podium finish, watched helplessly as his world crumbled like a deck of cards minutes into his fight against Northern Irishman Nathon Burns .

The Nigerian fighter was devastated as he failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the event in disappointing fashion.

Burns literally knocked Peter out, which is called ippon in judo (when an opponent's back is thrown onto the mat with tremendous force and speed).

The development saw the few Nigerian fans and journalists who made it to the Coventry Arena wear sad faces at the National Exhibition Center which would host the remaining events the country's contingent was due to attend on Monday.

Glimmer of hope

Next up was the women's 64kg weightlifting event where 19-year-old Islamiyat Adebukola Yusuf was in action alongside a long list of experienced weightlifters from across the Commonwealth.

In an event where the Games record kept falling, Yusuf did just enough to reach the podium with a combined total lift of 212kg in the Snatch and Clean & Jerk categories

She won Nigeria's 4th medal at the Championships by winning bronze in this highly competitive event.

Weightlifting has been the cash cow of Team Nigeria in Birmingham so far with a medal coming from over 60% of the events that Nigerian lifters have entered.
