Court ruling is a victory for democracy – Enugu PDP Campaign Council

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council, Enugu, has welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court of Enugu, upholding the primary elections which produced the candidates of the PDP of Enugu for the 2023 elections to the office of governor, to the National Assembly and to the State Assembly in the State.

The Council described it as a victory for democracy in tandem with established earlier court rulings and called on the opposition in the state to use the remaining campaign windows to sell themselves to the people of Enugu .

In a terse statement released Friday by its Director of Public Communications and Spokesperson, Nana Ogbodo, the Enugu State PDP Campaign Council said: "We welcome the judgment of the Honorable Court upholding the primary elections that produced our candidates in the 2023 General Election.

"This is a victory for democracy and it goes hand in hand with the provisions of our laws and the decisions of the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court in cases of this nature.

"Now that the honorable court has settled this matter, we must take this opportunity to advise the opposition parties and candidates in Enugu State, who hoped to achieve electoral victory through subterfuge, details techniques and propaganda to use the remaining campaign window to lift their manifestos and travel to nooks and crannies of the state to market them to the electorate as the PDP and its candidates have been doing since 2022.

“In the meantime, we appreciate our party followers and supporters for their support of the party at every stage of the process and urge them to prepare their voter cards to cast their ballots for the PDP on February 25 and March 11. 2023".

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Enugu North Senatorial District candidate, Mr. Chika Idoko, had sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), PDP and party candidates in the 2023 general election in the state, claiming that the PDP primary elections violated Article 77 of the Electoral Law and, therefore, should be annulled.

The lawsuit as FHC/EN/CS/217/202, Idoko also asked the court to punish the party under the existing provisions of Article 84 of the same law by disqualifying all elections of the party to the governorship, the National Assembly and the State Assembly. .

But delivering judgment on the matter on Friday, Judge Folashade Giwa-Ogunbanjo struck out the suit and upheld the PDP primary elections saying that not being a member of the PDP, the plaintiff did not have the locus standi for take action against what is essentially an internal matter of the PDP.
