Court of Appeal President Praises Jamoh's Commitment to Admiralty Matters

Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President of the Courts of Appeal, has commended Dr. Bashir Jamoh, Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for his exemplary leadership role in the advancing the cause of arbitration and mediation in admiralty matters.

Speaking at the recent seminar organized by the Nigeria Shippers Council (NSC) for judges in Abuja, Justice Dongban-Mensem said that Dr Jamoh was instrumental in keeping judicial officers up to date with knowledge relevant to deal with maritime affairs.

The President of the Court of Appeal, who personally participated in a similar seminar for judges organized by NIMASA, added that the DG set good examples for his peers, which increased the capacity of judges perform better.

Dr. Jamoh's impact is in areas such as faster and easier interpretation of the Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offenses Act (SPOMO) which aims to achieve a safer maritime domain; alternative dispute resolution in the shipping industry; the limits of Admiralty jurisdiction in Nigeria, among others.

Under Jamoh's watch and with NIMASA as an interested party, Nigeria registered its first conviction of pirates using the SPOMO Act at the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt in August 2020.

The three convicted persons were accused of having participated in the hijacking of an Equatoguinean-flagged vessel named MV ELOBEY VI, off the coast of Equatorial Guinea.
