Court orders ASUU to suspend strike

The National Industrial Tribunal of Nigeria (NICN) has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its seven-month-old strike.

The order followed the granting of an injunction sought by counsel for the federal government.

Federal government attorney James Igwe had sought an interlocutory injunction to prevent ASUU from continuing the strike pending the dismissal decision by Labor and Employment Minister Chris Ngige.

In his decision delivered in Abuja on Wednesday, Judge Polycarp Hamman granted the government's request.

He also rejected ASUU attorney Femi Falana's argument that the interlocutory injunction should be dismissed and the court should instead grant an expedited hearing for Mr. Ngige's earlier filing.
