Create the Ministry of Revenue, Senator Ibrahim appeals to Tinubu

Before President Bola Tinubu formed the cabinet, a senator asked the president to create a Ministry of Revenue.

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC Ondo South) announced in Tinubu the penultimate week that he had paid a courtesy visit to the President for the creation of the Ministry of Revenue.

Explaining the urgent need for a ministry in Nigeria in a personally signed statement on Sunday, Senator Ibrahim said the ministry, once established, would serve as a coordinating platform for all revenue-generating agencies.

The proposed ministry, he said, is essential for the nation to navigate its way out of the current socio-economic quagmire.

“There are many revenue generating agencies in Nigeria today without a coordinating body or platform.

"The Ministry of Finance does not provide the mobilization and coordination required in this regard, hence the need for the Ministry of Revenue.

"Similarly, in Nigeria, over the years, the Ministry of Finance has more or less played the role of bursar disbursing all the funds paid into the national coffers by the generating agencies, but there is no of treasurer to keep proper records of the income generated by the various agencies involved and give them the necessary impetus to generate more.

“Nigeria definitely needs a National Treasurer who will be symbolized by the Federal Ministry of Revenue when it is established,” he said.

He added that the idea was sold to Tinubu who he said saw the need for it in line with his pedigree on improving revenue generation.

He further posited that the Ministry of Revenue, when established, would be one of the strategies through which the nation's debt could be repaid by serving as a window to enhance revenue generation to accelerate development of the nation.

"N77trn's nation's debts should not be a cause for concern given the current debt-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio of less than 31% and have required innovative ideas to pay it off" , he added.
