I lead the way with intrepid vigor, and a few minutes later we emerge onto a beach of cinematic beauty. , with alabaster-white sand and a sea sparkling with the palest emerald.

But the charm of the deserted island is shattered instantly by an upset Italian woman walking towards us, holding a walkie-talkie and giving orders in comically accented English.

'NO stop! NO towel! NO, sit down! Walk!' She then asks our perplexed troop to follow her.
