Democracy cannot work without strong political parties - Buhari's minister Sunday Dare

The Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, has said that the current democratic dispensation in the country cannot work or progress without strong political parties.

Dare made the revelation on Friday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on the posthumous 73rd birthday of former state governor, the late Abiola Ajimobi.

DAILY POST collected that Ajimobi, who ruled the state for two consecutive eight-year terms, died in 2020.

Ajimobi, born on December 16, 1949, was governor between 2011 and 2019.

Our correspondent reports that prominent politicians including gubernatorial candidates, National Assembly candidates, academics, professionals and traditional leaders renounced their affiliations on Friday to honor the former governor whose posthumous birthday was today (Friday).

Some of those who were at the event dubbed Senator Abiola Ajimobi's Annual Roundtable and Posthumous 73rd Birthday which took place at the University of Ibadan included the Accord's gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Bayo Adelabu, All Progressives Congress (APC) Gubernatorial Candidate, Senator Teslim Folarin, Former Trades Minister, Chief Onikepo Akande, Ajimobi Deputy, Mr. Alake Adeyemo and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi.< /p>

Wife of former Governor, Florence Ajimobi, former President of APC, Akin Oke, former Commissioner of Health, Azeez Adeduntan, Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu who was represented by his Deputy, Lucky Ayedatiwa and former education commissioner, Adeniyi Olowofela were also present at the event.

Others present at the event themed “Deepening Nigerian Democracy for Sustainable Development” were the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Prof. Eghosa Osaghae, Prof. Albert Olawale, among others.

Dare while speaking said that all stakeholders including the media and civil society groups have a role to play in strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

He said, however, that today's democracy cannot function without strong political parties.

Dare who spoke at the event said, "So how can we strengthen our democracy?

"The role of the judiciary is very crucial. The media and civil societies must work to ensure that we strengthen our democracy.
