Diri grants 450 million naira to displaced flood victims

The Bayelsa State Government has announced the approval of an initial sum of N450 million by Governor Douye Diri, for the resettlement of people displaced by floods across the state to more land. and for the provision of relief materials.

Environment Commissioner and Chairman of the State Flood Task Force, Mr. Iselema Gbaranbiri, said the drill had started immediately and would be carried out on the basis of local government.

Gbaranbiri, who revealed it at the end of the 90th meeting of the State Executive Council at the government headquarters in Yenagoa on Wednesday, said those affected in the Yenagoa local government area would be relocated to the Oxbow Lake area and the state heliport.

He also said swamp boogies have been moved to strategic areas of the state capital to open up blocked channels in the worst affected areas.

Gbaranbiri said that in its preliminary report to the governor, the task force identified Ekeremor, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, Sagbama, South Ijaw and Yenagoa as the most affected local government areas.

According to him, the government was touched by the plight of the Bayelsans whose livelihood had been negatively affected by the flood and that he would ensure that those affected got some form of relief.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Information, Guidance and Strategy, Mr. Ayibaina Duba, said that according to the findings of the committee, places like Nembe Local Government Areas and Brass which were not affected by the floods of 2012 were affected this time.

Duba said the government was most concerned about the post-flood season, noting that after the 2020 floods, the government conducted pilot projects to control the ongoing natural disaster, which it said had given positive results.

For his part, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Moses Teibowei, pointed out that areas like Opolo and Okutukutu in the state capital, which were usually submerged during floods in previous years, were now safer areas due to locally caused flooding. -prevention technology deployed by the state government.

He said the government was ready to replicate the same flood mitigation projects in areas such as Down Yenagoa, Obele, Arietalin as well as Agudama-Epie, Akenfa, Akenpai and other areas of India. State experiencing high impact flooding.

Teibowei also said the flood affected some roads, especially the Bulou-Orua area on the Sagbama-Ekeremor road, which was cut off due to raging water pressure.
