Eddie Howe distances himself from comparisons to Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has insisted he cannot yet be talked about in the same breath as his famous predecessors Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson.

Howe has dramatically improved his reputation since being appointed helmsman of St James' Park by the cub's new Saudi-backed owners in November 2021 and overseeing a dramatic change in fortunes .

In 18 months, the 45-year-old had guided the Magpies to a first domestic cup final in 24 years and secured a place in the Premier League's top four by playing exciting football, a comparable feat to those of Keegan and Robson during their respective terms.

As a result, he earned a similar place in fans' affections, although when asked if he recognized the comparison, Howe replied, "No. For me personally, I don't see that. I have so, so much to do to talk about it in the same breath as these people.

"When I watched Sir Bobby's documentary, which I thought was amazing to watch, it struck you, his career and what he did and how he acted, everything about his character and the legacy he left here.

“It was a really powerful thing to watch, I thought, and I really, really enjoyed it, so no, I have a lot to do.

“The goal is to try to do the best you can. I don't judge them by what they've done - they're different eras.

“They did their best for the football club when they were here and they achieved amazing things, and I will try to do my best for the football club in the short and long term while I am here. That's all I can do.

“The result will be the result. I obviously hope it's positive, I hope people will remember it fondly. That's all I want. »

Newcastle take on Liverpool on Sunday in a match that still brings back memories of the epic 4-3 defeat at Anfield in April 1996 that rocked their quest for the title under Keegan.

His so-called Entertainers set the benchmark for generations to come and, like Robson, Howe is keen to replicate a style of play that excites fans.

He said: "I said very early on in my tenure here that being compared to the Entertainers was a huge compliment because we want to entertain, not necessarily instead of winning because we're here to win, but also to entertain.

"We desperately need our fans to come to the stadium and leave with this feeling that they can't wait for next week, with this feeling of, 'What are the team going to show today? ?".

“These kind of emotions are really positive and we want to leave lasting memories. I want my players to be remembered forever, to become club football legends. It's something I want for them. »
