Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, on Sunday described a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Udom Ekpoudom, as someone who seeks cheap popularity.

Akpabio said this, in a statement by his chief publicist, Mr. Jackson Udom, reacting to the Sunday PUNCH interview given by the ex-DIG. p>

In the statement titled “Ekpoudom in search of cheap popularity and undeserved pity,” Akpabio claimed the retired DIG had never been an All Progressives Congress candidate for the district Senate of Akwa Ibom North West and as such there was no reason for him to be asked to step down.

The statement read in part: "Retired police DIG Udom Ekpoudom, in an interview he gave to The PUNCH newspaper today (Sunday), reportedly claimed winning the APC senatorial ticket for Akwa Ibom North West District and went further to lie against all the known facts that former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio told him offered a ministerial position so that he withdraws from the senatorial competition.

“Normally we would not honor these unsubstantiated claims with a response, but for the interest and information of unsuspecting members of the public, who may be fooled by this outright lie, we must state as follows :

"That Udom Ekpoudom was never the APC candidate for the Akwa Ibom North West senatorial district and as such there would have been no reason for him to be asked to step down by Senator Akpabio.

"That the senatorial primary, which he claimed he produced as a candidate, is not recognized by the National Working Committee which is the legally recognized body to organize such an event.

>

"It's a known fact that the party's senatorial primaries were held nationwide on May 28, not May 27, where he allegedly claimed he had 'emerged' as a 'candidate'.

"The only recognized primary election for the senatorial district of Ikot Ekpene was the one ordered and overseen by the party's NWC on May 28."

"That it was Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, who was declared the winner of the primary, but due to security breaches that characterized the exercise, it was canceled and a repeat of the exercise June 9 was ordered and conducted, where Senator Godswill Akpabio emerged victorious."
