Emilia Wickstead RTW Fall 2023

After a string of low-key introductions over the past few seasons, Emilia Wickstead has returned to the runway with drama and a collection inspired by the disturbing 1990s TV series "Twin Peaks."

She chose a room at the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly to show off her bespoke designs, which came in a gardener's palette of pea green, raspberry and burnt orange. The colors were taken from the costumes, interiors and teen characters of the cult series which fused mid-century style with 90s grunge.

Wickstead models crisscrossed the room in earnest, showing off plaid pleated skirts and long jackets matching, and lovely satin briefs or wool sheaths with delicate folds and creases.

An orange heathered tweed dress with a low back looked sultry, as did a red satin dress with a deep V-neck, its color reminiscent of the eerie and paranormal “waiting room” of the mythical logging town of Twin Peaks.

Knitting played a prominent role in the form of matching, form-fitting skirts and tops, and thicker sweaters, too. Wickstead tucked a chunky corn-colored sweater into a 50s circle skirt; I paired a raspberry with a pencil style and layered an oversized v-neck polka dot green sweater over dusty pink pants.

"It's a pretty easy and effortless way to dress up and I loved its uniform," said Wickstead, who knows how to add drama to everyday life.
