"Endangered Species Front" campaign for sneaker brand Cariuma

Cariuma announces its first collaboration with National Geographic.

For the July 27 collection, the environmental magazine and ethical sneaker brand spotlight two special species: the green sea turtle and the Madagascar gecko, each of which contributes substantially to beautifying and preserving their natural habitats.

The sneaker collaboration features five core styles (including Cariuma's signature OCA Low/High sneakers) revamped with small animal decals. The sneakers include materials such as certified organic cotton, sustainably sourced rubber, cork, mamona oil (castor oil) and recycled plastics, and are available online at Cariuma.com for $89. at $110.

Cariuma said the mission behind this collaboration is “to explore, illuminate, and do our part to protect our home planet.”

As is the case with Cariuma's nature, the brand will plant two trees in the Brazilian rainforest for every pair of sneakers sold, through its in-house ecological restoration program. Additionally, each purchase from the collaboration (although the percentage has not been specified) will support the global non-profit National Geographic Society in its ongoing work of conservation awareness and education.

The Madagascar gecko (although not listed as an endangered species) is a vibrant and colorful contributor to the landscape of Madagascar and its island neighbors like Mozambique. The green turtle is the world's largest sea turtle and resides in over 80 countries around the world, responsible for the continued health of seagrass beds and their microhabitats.

“Our friend the turtle features prominently in this collaborative design, hoping to raise awareness and appreciation for this endangered species. Surfers at heart, we are prone to picking up stray trash and using the 'pack, pack' philosophy - invasive human behavior such as pollution and habitat destruction poses the greatest threat to their future," Cariuma said.
