Exploring Legislative Process to Address Challenges - Education Minister Tells Agencies

Minister of State for Education, Rt Hon Goodluck Nanah Opiah has advised agencies under his ministry to explore the use of the legislative process to address the challenges they face.

He said that since taking office last month after his appointment, agencies under the ministry have been briefing him on their operations.

Opiah said part of the interface that exists in the Department of Education is an opportunity for different institutions to address the challenges they face.

According to him, "most of the chief executives of the agencies who visited the minister's office expressed concern about the strengthening of the laws that created their establishments some of which advised that they were at various stages in federal parliament.

"Having listened to the Registrar of Librarians of Nigeria, LRCN, through Alhaji Jafaru Abdulahi Wase, the Acting Registrar/CEO and Professor Promise Mebine of the National Mathematics Center Abuja, who led their teams to the minister's office, Opiah advised those struggling with the structure and operations of the establishment, to consider using the legislative process through the national assembly as a solution” , he said.

While asking the two groups who visited his office to improve their self-sufficiency to reduce dependence on government for their survival, the minister called for public support from the private sector and businesses for some of the agencies since the government can't do it alone.

The Minister instructed the Librarians' Registration Board and the Mathematical Center to go further in exploiting ways to obtain the support of international agencies in the management of their programs.

He told LRCN to do more on e-library based activities to increase interest in reading.

He explained that the culture of reading is gradually dying, especially among young people who live more with phones lately.

“Increasing awareness for a better reading culture. You have a role to play as an organization in enhancing an enhanced reading culture.

“The library provides the opportunity to connect to the world. If we develop the right system, we can increase the interest in reading,” the minister added.

Responding to Mathematical Center officials, Opiah said that since everything in life revolves around math, the agency should raise awareness of its programs and engage in broad crusades to gain attention.

He also asked the center to invest in programs that will attract more international organizations to its activities.
