Dubai might not be on your radar for a lazy and steamy winter break - c It's a fair bit further than the Canary Islands and Spain - but for year-round sunshine that can reach 28C in December, it's hard to beat.

There are no verdant hills reflecting green in the sea, but it sparkles under this vast expanse of cerulean sky and there is plenty of pool and beach life.

And there's nothing better after an early morning sunbath than strolling along the glistening waterfront of Dubai Creek and the Marina to snoop around the chic outlets.

Our base was Caesars Palace on Bluewaters Island, near the creek and the old part of town, the neighborhood Al Fahidi. Talking about Dubai's history seems counter-intuitive as the city has risen higher than Manhattan on the sands of the Arabian desert, but there is a written record of 10th century Dubai with the Creek as its historic heart.
