FG hands over multi-million naira additional relief materials to Bayelsa

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development has confirmed the second shipment of food and non-food items by its operational agency, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the Bayelsa State.

In its latest update on the recent status of flood relief response in Bayelsa State, the ministry confirmed that the ongoing airlift of relief materials by the Air Force Nigerian started on Tuesday, October 25, 2022.

Additional relief items delivered include: 1,000 mosquito nets; 600 cartons of bath soap; 2,500 pieces of Guinea brocade; 1,000 pieces of children's clothing; 1,000 pieces of women's clothing; 1,000 pieces of men's clothing and 8,000 pieces of nylon carpet.

The foodstuffs delivered are: 1,000 bags (10 kg) of rice; 1000 bags (10 kg) of beans; 1,000 bags (10 kg) of maize; 75 bags (20 kg) of iodized salt; 150 seasoning cube cartons; 75 drums (20L) of vegetable oil and 75 boxes of canned tomatoes.

"These are in addition to an earlier shipment delivered on October 8, 2022 which includes the following: 400 10kg bags of rice; 400 10kg bags of maize; 300 10kg bags of garri; 50 drums of vegetable oil; 200 cartons of canned tomatoes; 200 cartons of indomie; 200 bundles of roofing sheets; 200 bags of cement; 40 bags of 3″ nails and 50 sheets of zinc.

NEMA authorities, through the South-South Zone office, have delivered an assortment of relief items including food and non-food items for immediate distribution in the communities of Otegwe and Ibelebiri from Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

Following heavy flooding of the East-West road linking to the state, the Nigerian Air Force intervened in operations to airlift relief items from Benin airport to Port Harcourt International Airport and the subsequent use of helicopters to move items to Yenagoa Heliport, the state capital.

NEMA also procured more relief items for a third response in less than a month to deliver to the state, including: 1,000 bags (10 kg) of rice; 1000 bags (10 kg) of beans; 1,000 bags (10 kg) of garri; 300 bags (20 kg) of iodized salt; 200 cartons of seasoning; 100 drums (20L) of vegetable oil.

Other items delivered are: 1,000 foam mattresses; 1500 pieces of nylon mats; 1,000 pieces of blankets; 2,000 impregnated mosquito nets; 800 pieces of Guinea brocade; 1,500 pieces of children's clothing and 500 pieces of wax.

Despite heavily flooded roads along Kogi State and other places on the way to Bayelsa State, delivery of the third batch of relief items to Bayelsa State is underway .

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq had led the NEMA response team which is currently in the state to work with the Emergency Management Agency of State (SEMA), Nigerian Navy in Bayelsa State, NNS Pathfinder in Rivers State, Nigerian Red Cross and local volunteers to carry out a thorough flood damage assessment, for a additional assistance from the federal government.
