FIFA Club World Cup every year… without the Europeans getting a pass to the final

March 17 - While the focus has been on the 2025 Club World Cup and how teams will or will qualify, FIFA has also announced that it will be hosting a global club competition every year.

In a press release following the presentation of the FIFA Council's decisions earlier this week, FIFA said that "the Club World Cup will be discontinued after the 2023 edition", but that a new annual competition will be created for “the champions of their (the confederations’) premier club competitions to compete against each other each year to boost competitiveness”.

FIFA said the annual event was created based on a "need expressed by the confederations".

But the competition will not feature the European champions before the final where the winner will be

“The FIFA Council has unanimously approved the strategic concept for an annual FIFA club competition from 2024,” FIFA said.

“This competition will feature the champions of the top-tier club competitions from all confederations and culminate in a final which will be played at a neutral venue, between the winner of the UEFA Champions League and the winner of the play-offs intercontinental between the other confederations.”

No further details on format, dates or number of teams were given but are to "follow up in due course".
