Former Pakistani PM shot dead

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was shot in the leg on Thursday during a protest march in Wazirabad.

Al Jazeera reports that the former prime minister was hit after a gunman opened fire on the protest ground.

Azhar Mashwani, an official with Mr Khan's Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf party, confirmed to Al Jazeera on Thursday that the politician had been shot in the leg but was not in danger. Six other people, including politician Faisal Javed Khan, were also reportedly injured in the attack.

The former president was taken to a hospital in Lahore. Footage seen on Aljazeera showed him waving to supporters as he was transported to a vehicle by security.

Reacting to the incident, his party, the PTI, wrote in a tweet "Imran Khan is our Red Lion - today an attempt was made to cross this Red Lion!"

Mr. Khan led a protest march to the capital, Islamabad, demanding a snap election.

The shooter was arrested by police at the scene. However, his identity has not yet been revealed.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a statement condemning the incident and called on the authorities to immediately open an investigation.

Mr. Khan started his long trek on October 28 from Lahore and is expected to reach Islamabad on November 11.
