France invests 110 million euros in the Kaduna BRT project

The French government on Thursday announced an investment of 110 million euros to support the development of the Kaduna State Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

Provided by the French Development Agency (AFD), the BRT is expected to improve urban mobility and the living conditions of the inhabitants of the Kaduna metropolis.

"In line with France's commitment to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda, the Federal Ministry of Finance has signed an agreement with AFD providing for a €110 million facility for Kaduna State to to develop a state-of-the-art bus rapid transit (BRT) system,” the French Embassy in Nigeria said.

The BRT system will help make Kaduna City's mobility system safe, affordable and more reliable, while improving its accessibility to residents.

An estimated 100,000 residents of Kaduna State will have direct access to the BRT corridor, while 160,000 passengers are expected to travel on the system daily.

In addition, the project will have positive impacts on climate change, resulting in savings of 45,000 tonnes of CO² equivalent per year, improved air quality and reduced traffic congestion.

Kaduna Metropolis is a rapidly growing and developing economic center, its population is estimated at 1.3 million and is expected to double by 2030 to 3 million.

According to France, under the combined pressure of demographic and economic development, the demand for travel will continue to increase in the years to come.

The project outcome includes the delivery of a 24 km BRT system with separated lanes, 30 bus stations, street lighting, pedestrian crossings, a bus depot, Intelligent Transport System (ITS) facilities and the purchase of 120 articulated buses of 18 meters.

The project will help establish sustainable operations of the BRT system through various engineering studies, the strengthening of KADSTRA and the transition from informal operators to the newly created bus industry.

Through the implementation of the project, KADSTRA will have the opportunity to share experiences with recognized and well-established transport regulatory agencies, including Ile-de-France Mobilité in Paris and the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA ) in Lagos, which AFD has supported since 2010.
