The crab lifted its shell, like a ballerina's tutu, raised six arms in an arc of a circle, stood the tips of two feet and clicked in cross-stitch motion along the polished concrete floor.

It was the most perfect movement I have ever seen performed by a crustacean. I rubbed my eyes in disbelief. And, with one last pirouette, it was off.

But then it was Alphonse - a magical little island in the Outer Seychelles. In an archipelago of 115 islands that dot the Indian Ocean like diamond dust floating in waters of sapphire, turquoise and jade, distance produces ever more perfect gems.

And in the Alphonse group - which includes the uninhabited islands of Saint François and Bijoutier, 400 km south-east of Mahé - Mother Nature is the most exuberant.

I swallowed my espresso and followed the crab to the beach, a few steps away through a bank of palm trees.
