Rare archival footage reveals early 1900s British and Australian expeditions to Antarctica

The collection is made up of hundreds of black and white photographs and glass plate negatives that document the conditions harsh, unusual wildlife and everyday life of epic voyages such as Australia's Antarctica and the British Antarctic Expedition, both of which took place in the 1910s.

The Director General of the National Archives of Australia, Simon Froude, said: "I am delighted that this collection is housed within the National Archives for future generations to access." These photographs complement other national collections documenting Australian exploration and research in Antarctica.

"The images provide a unique insight into the harsh conditions that explorers had to face. There are fabulous photos of the unique wildlife, as well as photos depicting the science and technology of the time.
