German minister warns against downplaying Russian nuclear threats

German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht warned on Thursday against taking Russia's nuclear threats lightly in the war in Ukraine.

Lambrecht issued the warning on the sidelines of a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.

“It is very important that we take threats from Russia very seriously and adapt accordingly,” Lambrecht said.

NATO ministers had said they needed to discuss how to deal with threats from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The consultations and deliberations of the nuclear planning group would, however, be kept secret.

Lambrecht asked that it be understood that these deliberations would take place in "internal secret committees".

"But I can say that we are ready." She added.
