'#greyhairdon'tcare': how women embrace their gray hair

Ageism around women's gray hair is nothing new. But in recent years, women in the public eye showing off their gray hair haven't been shunned. Instead, they were applauded.

At the Cannes Film Festival last year, actors Andie MacDowell, Helen Mirren and Jodie Foster all appeared on the red carpet with gray hair, and were celebrated for it.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow and singer Kelis also embraced their silver tones. MacDowell, who made the switch during the lockdown, called her new look "badass".

The gray hair fashion is also seen on social media. On Instagram, women like Jin Cruce – @agingwith_style_and_grays – and Sandrine P, who runs @grey_so_what, are the poster boys for the look. The #greyhairdontcare hashtag has been used nearly 500,000 times on Instagram.

Enabled TikTok, the same hashtag had 138.9 million views, while #greyhairgrowout, used by women who trade their dyed hair for their natural gray, had 3.1 million.

With increasing age diversity in fashion, gray hair has also been seen on the catwalk and in fashion shoots, formats traditionally dominated by youth. Models with gray hair include Kristen McMenamy, Enzie Domingo and Nicola Griffin.

Sarah Harris, deputy editor of British Vogue, sports long gray tresses - having found her first gray hair at age over 16.
